Landon Timothy Donovan was born on March 4, 1982, in Ontario, California. His mother, Donna, raised him with his twin sister, Tristan, and older brother, Josh, in Redlands, just about 75 miles west of Los Angeles. She and Landon’s father, Tim, divorced when Landon was two.
He signed a deal with German club Bayer Leverkusen in February 1999, becoming one of the youngest players in U.S. Soccer history to sign a professional contract overseas.
Donovan led U.S. team in appearances during 2006 World Cup qualifying, playing in 16 of 18 games while scoring six goals and registering six assists. Is the youngest player in U.S. history to reach 50 caps, and now has more than 75 at age 24.
After the 2006 World Cup, new head coach Frank Yallop awarded him the Los Angeles captaincy, taking over from Peter Vagenas, still active with the Galaxy.
